Lesson Plans
Grade: 7
Subject Area: The Solar System
SSS: Science, Standard Three: “Understands the composition and structure of the universe and the Earth’s Place in it”

Day One (Monday)

Addressing Benchmark 1:
Knows characteristics and movement patterns of the planets in our Solar System (e.g., planets differ in size, composition, and surface features; planets move around the Sun in elliptical orbits; some planets have moons, rings of particles, and other satellites orbiting them)

Knowledge/Skill Statements covered under Benchmark 1:
1.Knows the characteristics of the planets in our Solar System
2.Knows that the planets differ in size
3.Knows that the planets differ in composition
4.Knows that some planets have moons orbiting them
5.Knows that some planets have particle rings orbiting them

NET-S: Communication and Collaboration
-Interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of digital environments and media.

A. (Analyze your learners)
This lesson is intended for seventh grade students as an introductory of information on the Solar System appropriate to their grade level. They are only expected to have previous knowledge from prior grade levels as outlined in the SSS.

S. (State your objective)

Objective:
Given reading material, access to a computer/laptop, planet handouts and writing utensils, the seventh graders in my class will be able to identify key facts regarding the individual planets in our solar system and paraphrase such information within groups to record on planet cut outs; at least one statement per knowledge area covered.
-When achieved this objective will cover the knowledge, comprehension, and application levels on Bloom’s taxonomy.

S. (Select media and materials)
-Textbook
-Computer/ Projector
-Online quiz
-Print outs of planets find here
-Pens, scissors, colored pencils
-Internet Access

U. (Utilize media and materials)

Textbook- For students to do individual reading

Computer/Projector/Internet Access: To present quiz at the beginning of the lesson to see collectively where the students’ knowledge regarding the solar system is

Printouts of Planets/ Pens, scissors, colored pencils: In groups students will be recording information about the planet they are assigned on a planet cutout find cut outs here

R. (Require Learner Participation)
Under teacher guidance students will take an online quiz as a group for introductory and assessment purposes. After the quiz, students will do individual reading from their textbook, which will cover the above-mentioned Knowledge/Skill Statements. Finally, students will divide into eight groups (one for each planet) and decorate/fill out their assigned planet together. All Knowledge/Skill Statements are expected to be answered. Planets will be on display in the classroom.

E. (Evaluate)
Student comprehension will be evident based on the completion of their assigned group work.
